Scope/Description: The Mpumalanga Department of Roads and Transport was designing road based public transport services for competitive tendering in an effort to improve the public transport offering and introduce the minibus taxi industry in the design of the services.
Responsibilities: My role was the technical lead responsible for all tasks required for the successful design of the services. It requires communication skill where the project is introduced to the minibus taxi industry, and communication with the bus industry where they are informed that their involvement will be affected by the introduction of minibus taxi as part of the design. Point surveys had to be planned to ensure the current operations (bus and mini bus taxis) were covered. The design incorporated mobility needs of the community to larger towns where services are available. Finally, my responsibility was prepare the tender documentation for approval and advertisement and to benchmark the costing of the services to provide the client with an indicative costing for budgeting purposes.
